Education
Goal 1a:
The department will educate
predoctoral students to be qualified professionals with the knowledge
and competencies to be successful in their chosen fields.
Measurable Objectives
1a.1 All predoctoral students will
successfully complete the didactic portions of the Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery curriculum prior to graduation.
1a.2 All predoctoral students will
successfully complete the clinical portion of the Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery curriculum by accumulating the recommended number of procedure
points prior to graduation.
1a.3 All predoctoral students will
successfully complete the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Anesthesiology
portion of the National Dental Board Examination prior to graduation;
the average of all scores will exceed the national average for the same
examination.
Goal 1b:
The department
will educate postgraduate students to be qualified professionals with
enhanced knowledge and competencies to be successful in the specialized
practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Measurable Objectives
1b.1 All Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents will
participate in the OMSITE examination (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
In Training Examination) on an annual basis; the average scores for each
training level (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, and 4th year) will exceed
the national average in the same category for each examination.
1b.2 All Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery residents who are enrolled in the combined DDS/MD program will
successfully complete all portions of the USMLE (United States Medical
Licensing Examination) at appropriate times during their training.
1b.3 All Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery residents who successfully complete residency training will become
certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within
five years after graduation.
Scholarship
Goal 2:
The department
will encourage the scholarship of discovery, as well as the scholarly
activity related to the scholarship of teaching, integration, and application.
Measurable Objectives
2.1 The full time faculty members of the department as
a group will be involved in an aggregate number of at least three research
projects at any given time. The number of ongoing research projects will
increase to at least four by the year 2000.
2.2 The full time faculty members
of the department will present an aggregate minimum of five invited presentations
or seminars each year at national scientific meetings or host institutions.
2.3 The full time faculty members
of the department will author an aggregate minimum of three peer-reviewed
publications each year.
Service
Goal 3:
The department will enhance the
Schools service-oriented, patient-driven, oral health-care system,
which serves as a framework for education and providing service to the
school, the community and profession.
Measurable Objectives
3.1 Every full time faculty member based in the dental
branch will serve on at least one standing or ad-hoc committee of the
department, school, or Health Science Center each year.
3.2 Departmental committees on
Practice, Residency Education, Predoctoral Education, and Research will
provide ongoing input to the chair and to the faculty for continual improvement
of activities and actions to achieve goals.
3.3 A minimum of three department
full time faculty members will serve on local, state, national or international
professional committees each year.
3.4 A minimum of three department
faculty members will present in continuing education courses each year.
Professional Development
Goal 4:
The department will engage in professional development, planning, and
outcomes assessment activities as part of the Schools professional
development purpose.
Measurable Objectives
4.1 Each new full time faculty
member will participate in Teaching Effectiveness classes provided by
the Office of Professional Development.
4.2 Each full time faculty member
will participate in at least one professional development activity each
year.
4.3 Each full time faculty member
will participate in at least 12 hours of continuing education each year.
4.4 Each faculty member (0.5 FTE
and above), with the assistance and guidance of the department chairperson,
will annually develop personal goals and objectives as suggested in the
Dental Branch Career Development Plan.
4.5 Each full time faculty member
will participate in an annual review and assessment of department goals
and objectives.
4.6 Each full time faculty member
will become certified by the appropriate clinical specialty board (Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery or Dental Anesthesiology) within five years
of his/her initial faculty appointment date. |
