Dr. Ray Taylor
PhD, MS
Professor of Restorative Dentistry & Biomaterials, Director Houston Biomaterials Research Center
Ray Taylor has a multi-disciplinary education in biomedical engineering and materials science with interests in the areas of biomaterials, coatings, and corrosion mitigation. He is the Director of the Houston Biomaterials Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he is also a Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials.
His research has sought to understand the physical, chemical, and electrochemical phenomena that govern metal-polymer interactions in aqueous and biological environments This understanding has required the development of new experimental methods that include: local electrochemical impedance mapping and fluoroprobe staining to understand ionic ingress in polymeric coatings, as well as high throughput methods for the rapid identification of non-toxic inhibitor synergies and the assessment of coating systems for service life prediction. He has also developed methods to non-destructively evaluate the hydrostability and fatigue damage of graphite fiber composites. His multi-disciplinary education has allowed him to interact with a range of industries that include: biomedical, aerospace, nuclear, chemical, electronic, and others.
He received a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia and an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
